YOU:
Doctor Q, I don't fit in. What do I do! What do I do! Oh, tragedy!
DR Q:
First of all, it's not a tragedy. Could be there's something really RIGHT with you, instead of wrong. Millions of people are shy, for example...many gifted. A lot of daring and talented personalities started out feeling "apart". Often it can mean you're deep, creative, or "sensitive."
YOU:
Uh huh, sure. But I hate this feeling...Make it stop!!
DR Q:
The magic wand is yourself. Aim yourself in a constructive direction. Why do you feel you're a "stranded" jigsaw piece?
YOU:
I am ignored or laughed at.

I can't seem to make (or keep) friends.

I am homely and unpopular.

-

DR Q:
You have to realize people are often jealous, foolish, or cruel. Avoid being a blind captive of their superficial judgments.
YOU:
It's difficult to do that. Because I want to be accepted and liked.
DR Q:
Sure you do. But...try not to be a slave of that normal desire. Seek out worthy people who appreciate your unique style.
YOU:
Ok, Doctor Q. What else?
DR Q:
If you truly hate a body feature, or some other thing, make some changes. Be sure it's the right thing to do. Or...just accept what you have. Don't run and hide. If you're shy, become more assertive. If you dislike your body image, get some help from the experts.
YOU:
Could you be more specific?

How do I cope in the meantime?

-

DR Q:
Find a wise mentor. Join a support group or take a special class. Read a good book. I wish I could be more detailed, but you get the drift.
YOU:
Do those things really work?
DR Q:
Yes, they do. But I cannot stress this enough: the real key lies within you. Your first motto should always be: I am unique. I am a worthy person. I count for something.
YOU:
That all sounds like a cliche, to me.

Anything else, Doctor Q?

-

DR Q:
A cliche? You betcha! Cliches are repeated, endlessly, because they're good. Whether a cliche's a line from a movie or just cool advice, the trick's learning from the cliche...and putting it into practice. "Advice" cliches are the Ultimate Wisdom. They just take experience to heed. Progress won't come in a smooth fashion. But progress will come.

DR Q:
I am offering you guidelines. Some of these guidelines you can take or leave. You must choose the ones that work for you. Understand, however, that EVERYBODY wants to fit in. Each of us occasionally feels like a fish flushed ashore. But the situation is hardly ever permanent in nature. What's more...if you have a unique personality, more advanced and mature than the rest, you may not WANT to fit in!

DR Q:
Stay positive. Practice meditation. Find a place you can center yourself.
YOU:
Is that the key?
DR Q:
The key lies within. But accomplish the things you need to do in order to bring yourself closer to your goals. In the meantime, seek techniques to steady yourself. Exercise regularly. The body must exert itself...for the mind to find peace.
YOU:
That sounds like a cliche, Doctor Q!!

Thanks, Doctor Q.

DR Q:
I am your friend. You have me in your corner.
YOU:
Um, that's nice, Doctor Q. But I was hoping for a "flesh-and-blood" real kind.
DR Q:
Your best friend is yourself. Start from there.
YOU:
I heard that cliche before. Could you be more helpful?
DR Q:
Let's ask a question. Are you a "difficult" personality? Or are you trying too hard?
YOU:
Maybe I'm just an all-round mess!

Maybe I'm trying too hard.
